Crowdsourcing and Data Curation Mission for In America: Remember

In America: Remember is an interactive art installation built by visual artist, Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg of Bethesda, MD. The installation consisted of over 700,000 white flags – each honoring an American who has died from COVID-19. The immense field of flags were present on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. from September 17 through October 3, 2021.

During this installation, I joined a team of five other GISCorps volunteers in validating digital crowdsourced submissions via Survey 123 using Esri’s Crowdsource Manager application. We approved over 8,000 form submissions, whose messages were then written onto real flags by another group of volunteers in Washington, D.C., and planted on the National Mall as part of the COVID-19 memorial art installation.

In addition, the submissions were viewable online via two different interactive maps: In America: Remember and In America: Lost Loved Ones. The submissions for the Lost Loved Ones map allowed a longer tribute and a picture to be added with the submission. These digital maps allowed those who could not visit in person and wanted to submit a flag and/or view other submissions to do so, and for the submissions to continue to be viewable after the installation.
